It's Wrestlemania
If you don’t like that one how about this theme song
This is one of my favorite days of the year.
I make no secret that I was a very big wrestling fan. I know this will not be the last post I have about Wrestlemania.
To take you back in time to the late 1980’s my parents were adamant that I could not watch wrestling. I am pretty sure this was my mom who did not want me to be introduced to the violence. Little did she know by not letting me watch made me want to watch more. I tried to sneak it in a few times but really I never watched any of it. Then one day my dad caught me reading the wrestling magazine at the local Giant. I told him I don’t watch and even proudly said “I know Andre the Giant is the champion! (It was actually Hulk Hogan). But after this conversation my parents agreed to let me watch one wrestling show a week. So my loop hole was that I recorded the show and then watched it over and over again. That one show turned into me becoming the biggest wrestling fan out there. I would rent videos, read the magazines, and watch whatever I could that was connected to wrestling.
So it was now 1990. It was time for my first Wrestlemania. I was so pumped for it. The Main Event was the WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. the WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior. Title vs Title… The Ultimate Challenge
So here I was ready for Wrestlemania VI – When my parents grounded me and I could not go. I was heartbroken. I remember my best friend Matt calling me and shouting in the phone the Brutus the Barber Beefcake beat the undefeated Mr. Perfect (funny thing today I would be upset about that result). I remember being crushed when Matt called me to tell me the Ultimate Warrior just beat my favorite wrestler Hulk Hogan. The next day at school I told everyone that I was a Warrior fan and I knew he was going to win…. My sister called me out on that.
So now the year is 1992. Wrestlemania VII. A retirement match between the Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage plus Hulk Hogan was fighting for America against the evil Iraq turncoat Sgt. Slaughter.
Wrestlemania 7 saw the birth of the Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak where he beat Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Hogan regained the WWF World Title, and the match/moment of the night was the Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage in a career match.

And of course I was grounded so I did not get to see Wrestlemania 7. However, I did have an ace up my sleeve that year. The Pay Per View Channels had audio but squiggly lines. And that is how I watched Wrestlemania 7.
Ahhh…. My first live Wrestlemania, I went over Matt’s house as he had a bunch of us nerds over for this show. This show included the famous 4 out of 7 falls backyard wrestling match that saw me beat Matt 4 falls to 0. After the match Matt became sad and depressed afterwards and truthfully I felt horrible my best friend was that upset. So I took pity on Matt and told him that fine I forfeit the match. Then in typical Matt fashion, he then ran around his backyard like an idiot proclaiming how he beat me. This was also the Wrestlemania I introduced Matt to Steak and Onion Potato chips. As weird as they sound they became his favorite chips of all time. His second favorite… Hotdog and mustard.
I will spare you from me going year by year at Wrestlemania.
So at Wrestlemania XVI I consider this the first official Wrestlemania day amongst me and my friends. We were all over Buzz apartment at the greens at 12 noon, ordered food and watched wrestling all day long. Two years later when I was out of college the core of us, Richard, Buzz, Runt and myself started making an event out of this. Other people were over but in the end we committed a deadly sin of gluttony. I think we went through something like 17 pizzas. It was disgusting and something we are all very proud of today. Over the years the event has evolved. We have moved the event from place to place but it looks like it has found a home at Tony’s house. We now have a core group of guys, Tony, Richard, Buzz, Matt, Runt, and Lunchbox we play poker watch wrestling and get fat.
So today is the day we are going to Tony for our Wrestlemania Day!!!!
I don’t watch wrestling very often, if something big happens I try to find it on you tube, but I never set the time aside like I used to, to watch Raw and Smackdown. I try to watch a little more this time of year so I at least know what is going on.
Here are my predictions for tonight’s card. I will bold the winners

2) Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole
3) Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Cody Rhodes
